An Apology to Kelvin MacKenzie

For 23 years I have been mistaken about the Hillsborough Disaster. I have been under the impression that the tragedy of that day centred on the death of 96 innocent people.

My thoughts have been with those 96 and their friends and families who have been the victims of cruel smears and a cover-up carried out by the South Yorkshire Police.

What I hadn’t realised is that the real victim all along was former Sun editor Kelvin MacKenzie. Today he sought an apology from the police for misleading him.

They must have totally misled him because while other papers simply reported the Police smears as only allegations he printed them as “THE TRUTH”. So misled was Mr MacKenzie that as recently as 2006 he was still stating that he had reported the truth.

He has since been vilified but then how is a newspaper editor supposed to know the truth? If only Mr Mackenzie had had access to a large amount of investigate resources, then he could have searched out those answers and corrected his mistake.

So pity poor Kelvin, rather than spending the last 23 years fighting to clear a love ones name against an often indifferent establishment he has been having a profitable career in the Media.

Helping Uganda?

The Kony2012 campaign by Invisible Children Inc has not only highlighted an important issue but caused plenty of controversy. I’m not going to dip my toe into those shark invested waters but instead use this as an excuse to highlight a very worth cause in Uganda.

Before I start my plug I feel obliged for fear of stern looks from an Anglo-Uganda friend to make the following disclaimer. Uganda has its problems but like most African nations we should remember that it isn’t all Comic Relief and Bob Geldof.

Quite the opposite in many respects, Uganda has a beautiful green landscape, cities, schools, hospitals, a highly rated university, and rich musical and sporting culture.

Of course there are still problems, the poor treatment of women, child sacrifice, exploitation of HIV and AIDS sufferers and homophobia being some that stem from superstition and religious dogma. The Uganda Humanist Association (UHASSO) are trying to tackle these and other important Human Rights issues in Uganda.

Humanism is in short the belief in leading a ‘good life’ without the need for a god, it’s a rationalist approach to a better world, if you will. This can often involve tackling the very real problems caused by religious dogma. The UHASSO are trying to do just that.

A visit to their website gives you an idea of the very positive work they are doing on such issues, not just raising awareness but actually directly tackling the causes at a grass roots level.

You can follow their remarkable work on Twitter @uhasso including their schools, work with women and HIV/AIDs victims. They are not flashy social media savvy campaigners, but they are doing the important work of improving living standards.

Like many African orgs they are just getting into social media, you can help them take advantage in this new tool with the click of a button.

Britain: We Hate It!

The Sun newspaper has never been shy to fly the flag for Britain so I was a bit surprised to hear what Andrew Neil had to say about the attitude of the paper’s owner Rupert Murdoch.

“Mr Murdoch has never liked Britain, and he likes it even less now the establishments had its revenge on him so he’d like to break up the United Kingdom, no question about that”Andrew Neil, Sunday Politics 04/03/2012 54:35

Andrew Neil is very close to Murdoch and is something of an acolyte/mouthpiece for the Australian-American hacking profiteer so I’ll take this as the truth.

This does of course suggest the Rupert Murdoch, owner of the British Sky Broadcasting, The Sun and The Times, is anti-British. He profits massively from us, but has never liked us.

What appears to have really annoyed him is that we dared investigate allegations that one of his companies was listening to the voice mails of a dead girl and war widows.

This is a man who has tried to dictate British Politics despite having no right to vote in our elections and is apparently now planning to break up the United Kingdom, moving thousands of jobs away from England, for a lower tax rate.

Can you imagine what the Sun would say?

Surely it is time for every proud British man and woman to stop buying The Sun and cancel their Sky subscriptions to repel this foreign invader!

Boris Johnson’s (Real) 9 point plan for Greater London.

Boris Johnson has launched his Boris Johnson’s 9 point plan for Greater London, as with all things Boris I thought I better translate.

1)   Not to waste time at City Hall, TFL meetings are really dull.

2)   Save Londoners £7 a year on Council Tax, having increased travel costs by hundreds.

3)   Do two jobs for the next for years, it’s not like cutting ribbons is tough.

4)   Cover up the cuts in police numbers.

5)   Make green pledges whilst air pollution continues to rise.

6)   Pretend to care about the high streets I’d never visit.

7)   Take credit for the Olympics 2012

8)   Take credit for transport investment started years before I was elected.

9)   Plot to take over at No 10
